How Long Should Makeup be Avoided After RF Microneedling?

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling can refresh and rejuvenate skin with the combined power of two technologies. By adding radiofrequency to traditional microneedling, the skin rebuilds collagen as it repairs itself. As a result, the skin is transformed, and patients can see a reduction in everything from hyperpigmentation to texture issues.

At Elan Med Spa and Clinic in Waxahachie, TX?, physician and medical director Dr. Darrel Pierce performs RF microneedling for skin smoothing and tightening results.

Keep reading to learn more about what to expect after your treatment, including how soon after RF microneedling you can wear makeup again.

What is RF microneedling?

RF microneedling is typically a 30 – 60 minute treatment that creates small micro-punctures in the skin. Radiofrequency technology delivers heat deep into the skin at the same time to stimulate the production of collagen over the following weeks.

While the process may sound intimidating, most patients remain comfortable with the use of a topical numbing cream. The purpose of the micro-injuries in the skin is to encourage the body's healing response. In just 3 – 4 days, any small scabs that result from the treatment will fall off. In the weeks and months that follow, you will continue to see the rejuvenation of your skin and an improvement in the appearance of:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Submental fat (aka, double chin)

  • Sun and age spots

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Acne and other scars

  • Sagging skin

  • Visible blood vessels

However, it's crucial to take good care of your skin following RF microneedling treatment.

How soon can I wear makeup after RF microneedling?

Your skin may be red and sensitive almost immediately following RF microneedling, but it won't stop you from doing your daily tasks. However, patients will want to refrain from wearing makeup for at least 24 – 48 hours after treatment. This will ensure no chemicals or other foreign substances infect the skin or interfere with the healing process.

Dr. Pierce will give you a set of detailed aftercare instructions that may vary depending on your skin type.

In addition to avoiding makeup for a few days after your treatment, you will also want to avoid unprotected sun exposure for roughly two weeks. Skin needs to be allowed to heal and will be in a vulnerable state, and the sun can damage and alter the final results of your RF microneedling.

It's also crucial to keep your skin moisturized while healing and avoid any type of exfoliating cleanser, whether physical or chemical. Taking a day or two off from any sweat-inducing exercise routine also helps your skin heal.

If you experience pain and swelling after your treatment, a gentle ice pack is generally enough to alleviate discomfort.
